Here’s my cliff notes:
– average Cuban citizen lost 25 pounds
– as Soviet Union fell Cuba was importing 80% of its agribusiness based economy
– agribusiness was geared to exports not sustenance economy (tobacco
– the United States expanded and tightened its embargo at this time
– PREVENTED HOARDING Cuba rationed food and distributed along guidelines of world health organization for minimal daily calorie intake
– everyone in Cuba learned to grow food on any piece of land in an organic way (trial and error)
–1992 Australia began permaculture “ train the trainer” program “ it's not the technology. It's the human connection”
– Cubans were living on two dollars a month
– Cubans farmers now among the highest paid profession in Cuba with many people attracted to it
–took 3-5 years to REHABITITATE the soil from agribusiness
–11% of C. American scientists (2% of pop); created biopesticides and biofertilizers
–older farmers trained oxen and oxen drivers “did it because they had to”
–thousands MOVED RURAL to farm/private farms and cooperatives; fed neighbors/day care centers/old folks (gift economy; not barter)
–now working on transportation and housing
–free health care and schools continued thru Special Period
–kept lifespan of US (lives on ⅛ consumption of a US person)
–CUBA expanded medical training/exports MDs/Barters MDs to Venuzuela for oil
–everyone has a place to live
