Thanksgiving Leftovers

Yesterday, I had an almost perfect day of solitary creativity.

I am a second generation refugee from dysfunctional Thanksgiving family dynamics. That means that my parents were avoiding gatherings with blood relatives, way back in the early 1960s. It means that, by the time my mother died when I was 31, there just was not much family ceremony left to blow out of the water. What we did have was  a meal that revolved around her delicious cooking skills; that evaporated with her death..

Now, my offspring have taken that dysfunctional family legacy into its third generation. One of them issued an “ I've gone no contact" announcement close to three years ago. That took my grandchildren to the far side of a line drawn in the sand.

I recite the CODA version of the serenity prayer  A LOT:

“Spirit grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change/ the courage to change the one I can/ and the wisdom to know that one is ME”

The holy turkey day itself had long lost its shine for me. By my 30s, I did my own research and was led to the massacres that occurred in King Phillip’s War, losing any taste for re-habbing the holiday. By my late 40s, I chose to participate in my own yearly pilgrimage down to Plymouth Rock for the American Indians of New England Day of Mourning rally,  parade and community meal.

And I consider myself lucky, as I have never been much of a consumer of things here in America. So the Black Friday rush into “show me how much you love me by buying me LOTS OF THINGS” things frenzy of the hollow days generally passes over my head.

This year, the BLACKOUT THE SYSTEM push for an economic boycott has me waiting with great anticipation.

Anticipation, and moderate Spiritual optimism. It is not irrational to believe that such a miracle can happen; and that's exactly why I am writing this.

My playful Thanksgiving Day leaves me more solidly resourced for belief in ongoing miracles.

Since I was alone live in a studio apartment, had nowhere to go and nothing to do, I decided to PLAY. When asked by a friend how much of my day I could commit to play, I optimistically said “97%”, but I believe I actually came in closer to 80%.

I got that high percentage by pausing during my day, any time I found myself falling into a reactive thought or feeling, taking deep breaths and re-centering myself.

I am a Solitaire who lives alone in a 60 unit public housing apartment complex. It is standard public housing ugly; and full of institutionalized personalities. But my actual apartment has the most beautiful light I have ever lived with. All seasons! It filters in through two small windows. In the stark grey of winter, late afternoon sunlight sparkles and refracts across two Austrian crystals strategically placed in the windows, making rainbows dance around the walls of the room. I have that reminder of what a blessing I have received in my living environment in anticipation of a week-long economic boycott. I stocked up on yummy snacks and personal treats that meant that my playful Thanksgiving Day was accentuated by mini chocolate bars, and re-examination of favorite childhood holiday movies.

With “Golden” by the REAL women (who have REAL BODIES, thank God, not impossible proportions like the anime) as the KKKonsumer KKKlimax of the parade; out-stripping Santa on popularity:

From that surreal experience, I moved forward into a live stream of another parade. This one at Plymouth rock with American Indians of New England:

And I fell down rabbit holes, into a stupid fantasy film (trailer way better than the movie):

And I had STILL just barely passed the average of SEVEN HOURS OF SCREENS each AmeriKKKan watches, each day.

It was a VERY PLAYFUL and unusual day.

May my silly and magical musings created on a seriously flawed platform KKKeep KKKollapsing KKKonsumerism:
